8 New Year’s Resolutions That You Can Actually Keep (For The Most Part)
The best way to ensure you stick to your New Year’s resolutions? Make promises that are feasible. Here are eight minor changes that could have a MASSIVE impact on your life (and you don’t even have to give up coffee).
Like it or loathe it, it’s that time of the month when we start to think about New Year’s resolutions – you know, those promises you make to yourself that you probably break after a month or two.
1. I will remove junk and processed foods from my pantry.
And I won’t simply transfer such foods to another area in the household where the kids can’t find them. Try going without processed snacks for a month and you will be surprised how quickly this becomes a habit.
If you tend to pad your child’s lunch box with processed foods, then consider keeping away from the processed crackers, packaged muesli bars and other lunch box no-nos.
2. I will do some sort of exercise every day.
Even if it’s walking the aisles at the shops or running around the backyard 25 times, aim to move each and every day.
3. I will celebrate the little things.
Like making it out of the house on time, cooking a meal that the entire household actually eat and getting the kids to bed at a reasonable hour.
These things may not seem significant, but in the long run, they are a fist pump or high five at least.
4. I will increase my greens.
Instead of bulking up your plate with pasta, rice or bread – try adding some extra greens to your meal. Hide grated zucchini in your spag bol sauce. Add a layer of spinach to your lasagna. Aim to have greens with every meal.
Or every dinner at least.
5. I will decrease my addiction to sweet drinks.
Soft drinks and fruit juices really don’t bring anything to the table except excess sugar and possible weight gain. Keeping it out of the house is the best way.
If you need something to replace it, try a smoothie, or juice an orange, lemon or lime to add to some sparkling mineral water.
No one said anything about wine though, right?
6. I will enjoy my kids.
Not every second of every day. Let’s face it – that’s impossible, even if you’re the world’s most patient mum. But every day, remind yourself of how lucky you are to be their mum. Nurture their unique personalities, laugh at their silliness and relish in their innocence.
7. I will stay on top of my game.
The best way to do this? Stop putting so much pressure on yourself to get too much done. Set reasonable goals and if you start to feel stressed or disorganized, reassess your objectives.
A diary is a great tool to help keep you organized, especially in terms of meal planning, kids’ activities and other daily tasks that often need to be written down.
8. I will cut out toxins.
No, we’re not just talking about alcohol, sugar and processed foods (but those should probably go too). Toxins include people that make you feel bad about yourself, situations that make you feel unhappy and relationships that make you feel uncomfortable.
Surround yourself with happy, positive people and get rid of those toxic relationships that bring you down. You deserve better.
Sure, these resolutions may not change the world. But hopefully, they will help you become the happiest and healthiest mum that you can be.
